When the City of Irvine began its shift from at-large to district-based elections, it aimed to provide opportunities for the entire Irvine community to engage in the process. With outreach and engagement being a priority, they collaborated with Tripepi Smith to provide robust community outreach services and National Demographics Corporation (NDC) for mapping and demographic support.
Team Tripepi Smith, consisting of Principal Jennifer Nentwig, Business Analyst Kylie Sun and Junior Business Analyst Madeline Wilson, worked with the City’s communications team to conduct an expansive outreach campaign to drive public participation. Tripepi Smith leveraged many tools and strategies to execute that plan, including a dedicated website, social media, paid ads, street-corner banners, direct community group outreach, attendance at City-run events and more. NDC and Tripepi Smith facilitated 14 community workshops, giving residents the opportunity to learn more about the process, learn how to draw draft maps, and discuss submitted draft maps. In the end, Irvine received the most community-drawn maps NDC had ever seen.
“It was an honor to assist in such a large undertaking. Irvine is a city known for its professionalism, innovation and community-minded decisions,” said Jennifer. “Our team relied on past experience and close communication with City staff to execute their vision and create a collaborative environment for residents to learn and share their feedback.”
After extensive public feedback and engagement in the process, the City Council adopted a resolution to adopt the City of Irvine’s first voting district map for district elections. Voters will have the opportunity to vote “yes” or “no” on the March 2024 ballot.
