T
he Challenge
Scripps College Magazine’s Fall 2022 issue required high-quality photography to support two key editorial departments: a “Focus on the Faculty” spotlight on Associate Professor of Dance Kevin Williamson, and a two-page “Seen & Heard” event coverage spread. The assignment involved documenting three sequential dance performances across two distinct campus venues in a single evening. Tripepi Smith’s photographer faced significant technical obstacles, including low-light conditions, fast-moving subjects, dynamic stage lighting and limited access to optimal shooting positions. The intimate audience settings demanded non-disruptive documentation while maintaining the professional quality standards expected for magazine reproduction. Additionally, the varied venues — from Garrison Theater’s traditional stage to Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery’s multimedia installation space — required adaptability across different lighting environments and spatial constraints.
Our Approach
Tripepi Smith provided strategic account management, logistics coordination and technical execution. The team prioritized thorough preparation, conducting advance meetings with stage managers, lighting teams and venue staff to understand performance blocking, crowd size and optimal positioning opportunities. Tripepi Smith’s photography team selected specialized equipment, including silent shutter technology to minimize audience disruption and configured multiple lens options for the varied venue requirements. The shooting strategy balanced comprehensive event coverage with artistic vision, focusing on capturing Professor Williamson’s work within both traditional theater and contemporary gallery contexts.
During the evening, Tripepi Smith documented Keith Johnson’s SERIES at Garrison Theater, the multimedia installation “to get there from here” featuring live performance by Professor Williamson and other artists at the gallery, and concluded with works by LA Contemporary Dance Company and Rebecca Lemme’s “Acts of Matter.” Our approach combined technical precision with creative observation, periodically stepping away from active shooting to anticipate peak moments and optimal compositions. The methodology emphasized movement prediction and real-time adaptation to changing lighting conditions while respecting the intimate nature of each performance.
Results
The photography successfully enhanced both editorial departments, with Director of Creative and Editorial Strategy Maureen Panos noting that “Tripepi Smith truly gave the work of our esteemed faculty member the spotlight it deserves. The photography work provided was a key asset to this issue of the Magazine that we couldn’t do without, capturing the beauty of dance and the light that Professor Williamson brings to his students.” The images met all technical requirements for magazine reproduction while artistically conveying the essence of each performance across multiple choreographic styles and venue environments.
Blending technical and creative knowledge to tell stories worth sharing, the project demonstrated photography’s power to elevate any communications piece to the next level. The successful execution under challenging conditions reinforced Tripepi Smith’s capability to deliver specialized creative services that enhance client communications while honoring artistic integrity, further strengthening the ongoing partnership with Scripps College.
